Happy Ash Wednesday?
well it’s ash wednesday for all those christians out there. you know, the first day of lent? 46 days before easter? the day after mardi gras (fat tuesday)? the day that you see some people walking around with a cross made of ashes mixed with some (holy?) oil on their foreheads?

i always enjoyed the irony of ash wednesday falling on the day after fat tuesday
although i try to remain spiritual, i haven’t been involved in church for a while, and that includes the holidays. one of the more intriguing things about ash wednesday is that it allows you the opportunity to give up something for lent. lent, of course, being the 40-day long season with some type of fasting (and prayer) before easter.

IT’S ASH WEDNESDAY!!!1!
and what better way for people to pay homage to Jesus and his 40-days spent in the desert refusing temptation from satan than by giving up candy for a few weeks.
or soda.
or alcohol.
maybe even smoking!
hmm, smoking may be tough for some people.
definitely candy though!
easter, like christmas and almost all holidays now appear to have lost their original meaning. i’m not super-religious and believe that as long as you take some time, whether it be on a holiday or not, and give thanks for all you have and all your family, then you already understand the meaning of a holiday.
i’m also not giving up anything this year, not because i’m against the practice, but i’m actually going on vacation and that would completely defeat the purpose of the trip.
good thing catholicism allows you to repent and ask for forgiveness, because if i ever engage myself in the religion again, i’ll have some serious catching up to do.
and some serious candy giving up to do.
